You have to be odd to be number one!

I have little experience in tutoring. However, I have always helped my younger sister as well as some children I have babysat in the past. Even thought I have little experience, that is exactly why I am on this site. I crave the experience of working with children and helping them succeed! They have so much power and potential to do great things and I strongly believe that this is right for both me and your child. I want to not only teach them, but connect with them. I want to get to know them and their strengths and hopefully motivate them to become amazing, hard working students that they have the capability to be.
In the future, I want to work with kids, helping them to become successful and self expressive. I believe this is a good experience for both the children and I in helping us further on with our goals. I love working with kids and only want to help! Math comes extremely ... read more

FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY TUTOR (K-12) mdonasci@fau.edu

Business student at Florida Atlantic University. I graduated from A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts with honors in the visual arts, specializing in Architecture and Mathematics. I have also tutored for 4 years now while in school by teaching a wide variety of subjects to students from the ages of 5-20.
I use a Reciprocal/Practice based tutoring style. This an effective method because it allows me to interact with the student and help them grow more efficiently while holding an open discussion environment in each lesson. I then reinforce it with practice based assignments which are followed up with reviews in the beginning of the following class. This makes the student not only memorize definitions, but to also understand the reasoning behind different concepts.

A Little Bit About Me...

Right out of college I worked as a substitute teacher and then as a para-professional for 3-4 years with both learning support and emotional support students. Upon moving to Florida I accepted a third grade teaching position for St. Lucie County and have been doing that since 2007. I also tutored throughout this school year for a first grade and a third grade student.
I like teaching hands on and finding out with the student is into to help them connect with the area they are having trouble with. I like to make learning fun as well as applicable to real life situations so they can see how it applies to them.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Although I am well versed in this specific test and all of the skills that are assessed therein, this test will be phased out along with the FCAT in 2014. Its replacement has yet to be identified, but it will probably be designed to assess the requirements of the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) that are being fully implemented this school year in lieu of the Florida Sunshine Standards. See my description under Writing for a general picture of a tutoring plan for writing. All tutoring plans are individualized to meet the needs of the student.

I believe that everyone can learn; that we are all life long learners and that patience and encouragement are key to a successful academic experience for all who seek to improve their skills. I further believe in focusing on the strengths of my students and individualizing materials and activities to meet the needs of the student.
I have a B.A. in Speech and Communications and a Masters Degree in Speech and Language. I especially love working with special needs children with learning disabilities and language deficits. I have experience in assessment and therapy for Articulation, Language, Autism, and Dyslexia for children and adults. During my tenure with the Palm Beach School District I was able to assist many middle school students with special needs to complete their IEP goals and be mainstreamed to regular classes. My philosophy for working with young children is that le ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I love seeing their eyes glow up when they finally understand something or learn something that was completely foreign to them before. I'm currently an undergraduate student at the University of South Florida obtaining a degree in English literature. I attended one of the nation's best high schools, according to Newsweek. I received my International Baccalaureate program certifying me to master challenging courses for greater, global knowledge. I've been a tutor at the Lake Worth Library for five years. I've helped children of all ages think critically. I have tutored students in AP English Literature and IB English Literature. I also help students achieve their writing skills by improving vocabulary. I am also available to tutor in Spanish. The goal I have for my students is to reveal to them that they are capable of obtaining the knowledge that is ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is a combination of humor, question and answer, life experience, and history. I treat my students as adults. I follow the road, but go with the flow; no battle plan survives the first shot. There are many paths to learning. I never assume mine is the only way. Teaching is as much about learning as it is teaching. I listen to what my students have to say, and respect the opinions they have. I value honesty and set an example by admitting what I don’t know. My job is to discover, inspire and develop wisdom. Every teacher has been surprised by some brilliant insight expressed by a "low" performing student. It happens everyday. I’m convinced every student has a particular wisdom we just have to find, and encourage it.

I am currently a 3rd grade teacher. I am finishing my fourth year of full-time teaching. I previously taught 5th grade and will be teaching 4th grade next year. I have tutored independently though my schools for the past 2 years and have worked with students from kindergarten on up. I have a Masters of Education degree from the University of Florida and I am certified to teach from K-6.
I love teaching, it is my passion. I believe that each child has the ability to learn, it's just about finding how. Each child is unique and I believe that one-on-one tutoring is very beneficial to every student. It allows the teacher, or tutor, to really understand where the child is having his/her difficulties. My goal is to make sure each child reaches his/her potential.

More About This Tutor...

I taught high school for one year and middle school for a year and a half. I was certified to teach social studies 6-12, though I have let my certification expire. I have worked with middle school students for the past four years in an administrative and service capacity. I am an ex-Member of the Florida House of Representatives and have informally many students at the middle school level. My degree is is in Business, but my passion is social studies and reading.
Teaching is enjoyable to me, but the bureaucracy of the school systems is not. I believe that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to helping students learn. My children attended Montessori school during their elementary school years, and benefitted greatly from that method of education. They were treated as individuals and it well prepared them for the next steps in their educations. One of my children is ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When working with youth and adult learners, I use an authoritative style of teaching. This means that I set clear expectations and explain the reasons behind the rules and procedures used during instruction. As an authoritative teacher, I encourage my students to be independent, to make informed choices and to apply what they have learned in relevant ways that create meaning. I look forward to the opportunity to help your child achieve academic success.
I have 25 years of education experience, having taught students in special education and Title I classrooms. I have also served at the district level in public education and served on the Board of a private school. I am currently an education consultant, providing workshops for educators and parents. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe teaching should be both effect and fun. If the students are not interested or cannot apply what they are learning to real life situations, they are less likely to retain what they have learned. I also believe in modifying instruction based upon the student's working level. Students will become frustrated quickly if they feel they cannot complete the work.
I have been working the Martin County school system since August 2008. I completed a 15 week internship in a 3rd grade and taught 4th grade for 3 months for a teaching on maternity leave. I am currently substitue teaching at the elementary and middle school levels. I have tutored students ranging in ages from 6-9 in the subjects of reading, math, and phonics. I am certified to teach grades K-6 and am ESOL endorsed.

Each person, regardless of race, religion or socio-economic background is entitled to and should not be denied an education. Children should learn appropriate skills in the age-appropriate environment, and should be challenged to meet and achieve higher learning practices. Learning methods vary depending on how individuals perceive and utilize information; therefore various tools of learning should be implemented to facilitate various needs. I rely on tested theories and practices, advice from peers and implement my own personal means of conveyance. Learning is not only achieved through lessons, assignments and evaluation, but by diversified means such as respect, caring and a true love of the teaching profession.
