When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. After I graduated I got a job as a tutor working with high school students on preparation for college entrance exams and mathematics. I found that to be very rewarding.

These were the main classes I taught, but I also did Spanish 1, ecology, and food science/nutrition. I also tutored some high school students in all subjects but mostly math and science.
I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them.
