While earning my bachelor's degree, I worked in several tutoring programs assisting students with reading comprehension and writing composition skills. I taught grammar to small groups, read one-on-one with third graders and assisted junior high school students with their homework assignments. Though my degree is in fine art, I began my undergraduate career as an English major. In high school I took both AP English exams and I went on an honors trip to England to study British literature. I’ve never bought into the argument that some kids just can’t do math. There is plenty of truth that some learn math much quicker and easier than others, but with a good work ethic and plenty of encouragement all kids are capable of learning these sciences. I feel the most important thing to do as a teacher is to stay positive, and try to somehow relate the math problems to real life situations. When correcting a student, it’s vital to carefully choose your words, for a harsh response will demoralize the student’s spirit and desire to learn.
