In my past I have taught many years as a tennis instructor and ski instructor. I also taught at a Federal correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado in their Education Department in 1990 and 1991. i tutored inmates for their 8th grade equivalency as well as several others through their GED's. In 2002 through 2004 I also was the training officer for Star West Aviation. My teaching style was, and always has been to use humor and patience to bring my students along and to achieve where they had failed in the past. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. It is very similar to sports, you start off learning the techniques and then you must learn how you best apply them, and yes it takes practice. I have gathered many tools in my life and they came from all the different activities I have done. One must only keep the eyes open and mind focused to absorb the world around them.
