Striving to make the student feel comfortable is part of my basic repertoire of teaching strategies. I know that when a student does not succeed in a typical classroom environment it is easy for the student to feel negative about learning. Our society is based on the 'cookie cutter' ideology one size fits all. So when I tutor I strive for the student to feel comfortable first. Indeed,my teaching style had always been to pay attention to them one-on-one,when they seem to be struggling with a particular assignment. And this is how, I started with my step-daughters,as they were teenagers in high school. Because,I had to set schedules for my girls,that way there is no room for too many playing time,and just watching television.So,at least two hours of their time,is on homework assignments,sometimes thirty minutes extra would be included. My son, as I stated earlier can be rebellious, so I have to be very patient with him and always stay positive. I constantly tell him how smart he is, how well he is doing, and I always point out his accomplishments and tell him where more work is needed. This style to me is important when working with any child, positive reinforcement and contant encouragement is needed.
