Carried by a love and facility for the English language, I received a B.A. in the subject from the College of the Holy Cross, and a M.A. from Georgetown University. In these rigorous programs, I learned the skills of critical reading and writing. I have used these skills as a publications assistant, a position in which I wrote and edited newsletters and magazines for a financial association. For the last eight years, I have written and edited for TrafficEast, a general interest magazine based in New York. I encourage a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the student and I can work together to create goals and then decide on the best ways to achieve these goals, including discussing which learning style works best for the student. I encourage students to learn by doing and by thinking. So, rather than give the student a list of rules to memorize, I prefer to give an example of a rule and then have the student interpret the example and implement it in a new situation, afterward reflecting on what they did to see how it helped (or did not help) them learn. Most of all, I love watching the students grow from what they have learned and challenging them to meet (and make) their goals.

Regarding math, I use real-world examples to show how a particular concept is important. Then, I show the method to solve the problem. Next, I have the student teach me how to solve the problem. Finally, I have the student do practice problems in order to master the material. Practice indeed makes perfect. I hold students accountable for completed homework. My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

A Little Bit About Me...

My educational philosophy is strongly influenced by Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I approach teaching from that perspective, incorporating a variety of disciplines and media to build on a student's strengths, to have fun while learning, and to challenge areas (building new skills) where a student can benefit. I volunteered at Howard Gardner's Project Zero at Harvard to understand how to evaluate learning through qualitative and quantitative measurements. Each student brings "genius" to learning, and our collaboration together would be to creatively build and strengthen from that place of genius.
