A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

I love teaching kids. Kids absorb new things like a sponge and often need things taught in a variety of ways in order to fully comprehend a subject. Regarding math, I use real-world examples to show how a particular concept is important. Then, I show the method to solve the problem. Next, I have the student teach me how to solve the problem. Finally, I have the student do practice problems in order to master the material. Practice indeed makes perfect. I hold students accountable for completed homework.
