Carried by a love and facility for the English language, I received a B.A. in the subject from the College of the Holy Cross, and a M.A. from Georgetown University. In these rigorous programs, I learned the skills of critical reading and writing. I have used these skills as a publications assistant, a position in which I wrote and edited newsletters and magazines for a financial association. I encourage a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the student and I can work together to create goals and then decide on the best ways to achieve these goals, including discussing which learning style works best for the student. I encourage students to learn by doing and by thinking. So, rather than give the student a list of rules to memorize, I prefer to give an example of a rule and then have the student interpret the example and implement it in a new situation, afterward reflecting on what they did to see how it helped (or did not help) them learn. My teaching style is to listen to what the person needs help with, and then to ask them what they already know about the subject. Next, I will show him or her to solve the problem, then ask him or her to try it himself or herself. If he or she has any questions, I will answer them. However, I think that it is best for the person to learn how to solve the problems with assistance from myself, but not to do all the work myself. Ultimately, I want the person to rely on his or her own knowledge in order to become more independent; I am only there to encourage and make any needed corrections.
