Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. I love to see students finally understand something they find challenging. My love of reading and writing has led me to excel in 2 languages. An English major at Carleton College, I mastered the art of putting thoughts on paper to persuade, compare, or explicate; as well as how to read for meaning. I have been very passionate about teaching struggling students, particularly in the area of reading. From 2000-2004, I taught struggling 8th grade readers and could see the impact that being behind in literacy skills has on students. Although I had already returned once to PSU in order to add my special education endorsement to my teaching license, I decided to return again to PSU and complete the Graduate Reading Program. I have also worked as a Title 1 Reading Specialist at the elementary level as well as a supplemental services provider within the public school setting through No Child Left Behind.
