I've taken courses in tutoring, grammar, Shakespeare, and writing composition, as well as worked in the University Writing Center at my university as a writing consultant. Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills.
