Composition is one of my top subjects! As the child of a novelist, there was an extremely heavy emphasis on composition in my education.

I love to incorporate art and sensory experiences into everything I do to really activate the brain. The "Drill and Kill" is very rarely appropriate, so I tailor every approach individually. What works for one student may not work with another. My formal training includes many intervention types and experience with multiple programs and curricula, so I have a large pool from which to draw...then we get creative! My style REALLY aims for those over-arching foundational skills like critical thinking, thought organization, and problem solving. I will also track and provide data to monitor progress and hold myself accountable for effectiveness.
Let's start out by saying I am definitely not your average tutor! Fun is vital to motivation, and I live on the stuff! I have been teaching for over fifteen years in a variety of environments, working in inclusive environments with children ... read more

I studied Languages for four years at University. I was about to get a degree in English and Portuguese when I moved to the US. I taught for one year. I worked in 3 different schools, in all of them, the subject was English. I have no experience teaching Portuguese outside of college, but I am planning to find students to change that. A Little Bit About Me...

I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. I have also provided SAT and AP preparation tutoring.
My instructional approach emphasizes interactivity, use of new technologies, and a positive, "we can do it" philosophy that acknowledges writing s a process that starts with the creation of ideas, moves to refinement and revision, and ends with emphasis on correctness. In this approach, students who find writing challenging often discover that an emphasis on writing freely and creatively along with a focus on critical thinking skills, is the fastest way to improved written content and technique.

I believe all children can learn. A good teacher tries to find each child's individual learning style and accomodate lessons to match it. I also think learning should be fun, so I use a lot of games and other incentives. I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and have age and the experience of being the mother of two twenty-somethings on my side.
I taught in the Wright City RII School District for 26 years, at both high school and middle school level. During that time I taught everything from English and American literature to basic grammar and writing skills. I also taught some reading classes. I have extensive experience in writing research papers and strong skills in grammar and punctuation. I was an assistant principal for two years, and helped develop a reading program for the middle school. As a professional teacher tutoring students was an essential part of ensuri ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is that of an energetic and enthusiastic mentor. I listen allot, work very heard to establish rapport and trust, and work with them where they need the help. I convey my own love of learning and how important reading comprehension, writing skills, tha ability to convey one's self in both writing and speech is, and how much they will need these skills to get ahead in life. I try to "partner" with them to help them to move forward. I try to help my students realize accomplishment, however small, at each step of the way. Empowerment is what many students need. They need someone to believe in THEM. I do that well and make myself available for help - day or night. I am only a phone call away.
