I believe that every student can learn more than they think

I have taught for over 30 years in a variety of institutions, but mostly public schools. I am conversant in Spanish and have a broad range of interests and fields of knowledge, including English literature, Math, History, Science, current events and Politics. I have taught grades 3-12, and have experiences teaching all income levels and socio-economic backgrounds.
I am a laid back type of instructor and use my experience and intuition to create unique learning environments for each student. I like students to express themselves in their studies, and I encourage each student to express their natural gifts. I have taught and tutored both children and adults in a wide variety of situations, from job training and test preparation to tutoring for a specific subject. I have taught ESL classes and done individual tutoring, as well as both group and one-on-one instruction in grammar and composition. I have tutored for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, TOEIC, ISEE and entrance exams. I have created my own materials for such tutoring but also use books available commercially.
I am interactive and student-centered. I see where the student's strengths lie and build from there. We do homework and tests together, and I move from a coaching role to an observational one, only coaching occasionally as necessary. We work not only on the subject matter, but techniques which improve comprehension, retention, organization and motivation.

When you enter a classroom it is like entering a mixing bowl full of different ability levels, motivation levels, talent, and skill. It is the teacher’s job to address each one of their students as an individual to assess what their strengths and weaknesses are. I believe in data driven assessments, but also in getting to know a student personally. The students know what they are good and not good at. They will be honest most of the time if they are comfortable with you. I believe in differentiation to the highest degree and practiced this in my alternative high school experience every single day. It is not fair to bore some students with information they already know and overwhelm others to the point of lowering their self esteem.
