SAT - Math is one of my top subjects!

I engage with a new student for a relationship. I inquire regarding their expectations, concerns, fears, and hopes for tutoring. I then explain my tutoring philosophy. Then, I ask for a diagnosis of how well they are performing the course material subject, and how I can help them best in the first session.

I believe that every student can learn more than they think

I have taught for over 30 years in a variety of institutions, but mostly public schools. I am conversant in Spanish and have a broad range of interests and fields of knowledge, including English literature, Math, History, Science, current events and Politics. I have taught grades 3-12, and have experiences teaching all income levels and socio-economic backgrounds.
I am a laid back type of instructor and use my experience and intuition to create unique learning environments for each student. I like students to express themselves in their studies, and I encourage each student to express their natural gifts. I have a creative mind which allows me to relate to many types of students and many subjects and to use student's natural interests as a starting point for learning new material.

A Little Bit About Me...

I wanted very much to teach at the Liberal Arts College level but was unable to secure a full-time, permanent position. In pursuit of this goal, I have completed an MS in Physics, all the coursework necessary for a MS in Mathematics, an MA in Philosophy, and I am working to complete my PhD in philosophy. Over the last 10 years I have taught at every level from high school to university, and have frequently tutored students at all of these levels.
I have never taught a subject, physics, mathematics or philosophy, at a level that was beyond the abilities of any student who really wanted to master the material, and I don't think I'd be interested at teaching at that level. Many students are not able to master these subjects in school, but quite often it is not due to a lack of desire on their part, but instead a lack of sufficient preparation due most often to poor prior instructi ... read more

I am a recent Economics graduate with a Math minor (more than 30 units of math) I've tutored at Jefferson H.S. in Edgewater CO in 2006 and am a former Marine in the communications field with years of instructional experience.
I love working with youth and feel very comfortable teaching math up through calculus. My approach is to teach from the ground up, without any assumptions about prior math knowledge. Having been someone who formerly had difficulty with the subject, I can better understand some of the pitfalls that the student may encounter.

More About This Tutor...

I have a substitute teaching license from the state of Colorado. I have been subbing for Denver Public Schools and Cherry Creek School District for over three years. I have worked with ages ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade.
I enjoy working with students and have a high level of patience with each grade level. I am usually pretty laid-back and allow students leeway to have a bit of fun while they learn. I believe that without a little fun in their daily routines, students grow stagnant and bored easily. I enjoy feeling that I make a difference in student's lives.

More About This Tutor...

I worked at Moorpark College as an ESL and Writing Tutor, helping students discover ways to identify and clarify ideas, refine a topic, outline ideas, and develop the skills needed to work independently. I have my BA from Scripps College in both English and History. I have significant experience tutoring within the humanities, but also German, math and the sciences. I started college as a Biology major, so I have a firm grounding in mathematics and the sciences, which I have bolstered to prepare for graduate school in Architecture. I was a Jumpstart (AmeriCorps) team leader, which involved implementing early childhood curriculum and promoting skill building for at-risk preschool children.
I have helped children prepare for preschool through games and activities, and community college students brainstorm ideas for transfer essays. I am very organized, responsible and trustworthy. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Perhaps stemming from my time as the owner of a successful construction company, I've found that I learn best when I'm provided mental imagery, which often means the employment of analogies and metaphors. Cell biology became simplified when viewed as the textile manufacture and the subsequent distribution and utilization of the products. Due to being a non-traditional student I've also realized that patience is imperative. I've felt like instructors have given up on me in the past, only to keep forging ahead either by myself or with the aid of a tutor and eventually master whatever material was at hand. Also, my experience in the past few years in the E.R. has allowed me to become adept in dealing with and defusing difficult situations.
My experience as a non-traditional student has payed huge dividends not only for me, but for those I've helped during my time as a T.A. and tutor. ... read more

More About This Tutor...

When I think about my strengths as a tutor, two things come to mind. First, I am a person who really appreciates a good teacher. My best teachers were able to convince me of my own ability to solve difficult problems by providing a good challenge and also with lots of patience. So at the heart of my tutoring strategy is patience. Second, I approach problem solving with concrete strategies. In tutoring, I am trying to teach problem solving strategies so that students can answer questions on their own.
I have worked as a college and high school level math and science tutor for three years, two years at a community college in San Diego and one year here in Denver helping high school students with math and science and test prep needs. Though I ended up getting my degree in a humanities based discipline, I studied a lot of math and science in college, focusing particularly on chemistry. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with my B.A. and M.A. in European Cultural Studies and Journalism. The core of my curriculum as a Trustee Scholar in the University Professors Program was three consecutive programs in Europe. In Paris, I worked as the American Correspondent for a prominent French magazine. There, I demonstrated my success as an “ambassador” at frequent press conferences. Because of my meticulous editing skills, readiness to collaborate, and bounty of creative ideas, the editor also invited me to assist him with his recent book, Bijoux, which was showcased at the Musée des Arts décoratifs. While studying modern British literature and history at Oxford, I took the initiative to devise a supplemental program of solo excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in preparation for my thesis, “Cultural Landscapes of the Literary Imagination: Parisi ... read more

I have been teaching in both classroomas well as one-on-one settings here in the US as well as Europe and South East Asia for over 20 years. I have taught a wide range of courses including, writing composition, grammar, speech, social studies/cultural communication, ESL, conflict negotiation and mediation as well as test prep for SAT, TOEIC, TOEFL and the LSAT. A Little Bit About Me...

A good teacher is able to recognize strengths and weaknesses in his students and create an approach that utilizes the strengths to improve the weaknesses. For instance, if somebody is having trouble grasping qualitative concepts but has a strong mathematical background, employing a quantitative approach to demonstrate the concept would be useful. Passionate yet easy-going, I understand the need for balance between challenging my students and exercising patience. My students will gain an appreciation of the learning process and acquire the knowledge necessary to be successful in academia and the real world.
As a Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology major at Emory University, a heavy science course load was complemented with a liberal arts education. This well-rounded education equipped me with the tools to tutor students in everything from organic chemistry to proofreading pa ... read more
