I spent 2 years tutoring Math for the students in my Mothers classroom afterschool (4th grade). I spent one year in college working with special needs students from the local elementary school, which included writing lesson plans and executing activities in group form. I taught one year of 7th grade Health and Physical Education. I tutored all the students at the end of the year to help them achieve passing scores on End Of Grade testing. I do not like to teach out of textbooks. I use them primarily as resources. I prefer to create a lesson or activity that plays to the strengths of the individual child/student and challenges them on their particular level. I have found interactive lessons are very effective for all age ranges.

I like to have a guide for the daily work and have specific goals every day. However, when someone is interested in a different subject, I like to explore that topic. I think it is very important to keep students alert and motivated, so I like to explore all types of learning expericences. For example, I enjoy working with the special education children, getting them to stretch and walk outside. I like to play music to them and get them to sing along. I also enjoy getting these children to create art and express themselves in short sentences, writing to match their abilties. I am a very patient teacher and meet students on their level, speak and relate to them with respect and love---and teach them according to their needs and skill levels. If a student is difficult to work with, I will not hesitate to steer off the subject path for a few minutes to discuss something that interests them--this gains their respect and creates a bond with the student--then I steer us back to the subject at hand.
