I found the class very exciting as the students where very diligent and always did their pre-lab before each class, making the class easier for them to understand. Teaching style depends on the student. Establishing rapport at the beginning of the sessions and taking the time to talk to each student one on one will set a good foundation for learning. I teach through discussion and have the student teach it back to me or another party to be sure they understand the problem. I am confident they will progress with this approach. As a former probation officer in both the juvenile and adult population, I have worked on numerous community service projects and helped teach at risk youth life skills as well as assisting in acedemics. Additionally, I hold two degrees which has challanged me in the areas of reading and math. During this past year, I have tutored students from K-6 in the both reading and math. When I work with students individually, I do not use pre-planned lessons. I assess their needs and develop custom tutoring sessions for their maximum benefit. I like teaching math because math problems all have a specific technique or method. Very little memorization is required. All math problems of a certain topic are completed using the the same methodology. Getting students to realize that is the key. Students who struggle in math will look at two homework problems in a section of a textbook and see two completely different problems. Once they understand the methodology is the same, they will begin to see the same problem repeated with different numbers (instead of two different problems). That is when I know I am successful.
