I have experience tutoring students for the SAT, both individually and in small groups. I worked with the Let's Get Ready organization in Framingham, MA, which offers weekly SAT sessions for students in underprivileged neighborhoods. I am a big proponent of the theory of multiple intelligences and believe that each student has certain styles of learning that work best for them. Having scored a 1370 on the SAT after three attempts, I can safely say that I wish I knew then what I know now about taking the SAT. My lessons can range from private lessons to group lessons of no more than five at one time. I prefer to be very involved in my students' progress, and will readily explain any questions that they do not understand. My main strategy is basically to lay out the concepts that will be covered that day, go over several practice problems, and give three or four practice problems for the students to work on independently. For art students, I will demonstrate with explanation the concept that we will be covering in that lesson (be it portraiture basics or still life basics), draw diagrams with the steps clearly labeled, and have the student independently work on a similar piece which applies the same concepts.
