I worked as a tutor in college, and I taught some groups of children Spanish and French while in college. After graduating from college, I taught for 4 years, grades 7-12. Also, I worked as a graduate assistant at Indiana State University and taught college freshmen. After graduating with honors from Grove City College, I took a position as a writer for a large nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. While working as a professional writer, I dedicated my free time to tutoring at a center for urban kids. Learning must be fun, especially in a tutoring context. In my previous tutoring experiences, I always attempted to turn tasks into games or opportunities for creative expression. For example, multiplication tables can become an opportunity to play a relay game. Learning different parts of speech can be made enjoyable by creating an imaginative story. As a student at Earlham College, a liberal arts institution, I had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of academic experiences. My study of Spanish was also quite thorough, and during my four years at Earlham I went from being an intermediate speaker to a fluent one.
