Experience Summary
I have extensive experience teaching writing to a diverse group of students. After graduating from Indiana University with a BA in English, I taught high school English in East Lansing Michigan from 1988 until 1991. In the fall of 1991, I began work toward a MA in English at the University of New Mexico. Upon earning my MA, I taught English Composition at Grand Valley State University and Albion College. Recurrently, I am a volunteer writing tutor at the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy in Lafayette, Indiana.
Teaching Style
To the extent that I can, I tailor my teaching to the individual needs of the student. Typically, after assessing the student’s writing and discussing what he or she perceives to be their strength and weakness as a writer and determining what his or her goals are in terms of improving their writing, I proceed to develop a curriculum or plan that I believe will enable the student to achieve the goals we have mutually agreed upon. I am a firmly believe that good writers are made and not born; therefore, it is only through persistent practices that writing skills improve.
