My comments on tutoring Latin : For a six month period I worked in tandem with a highly proficient Latin instructor who had 14 students achieve Magna Cum Laude in Latin one year. As my language choice in high school, my studies in Latin have assisted in my achieving superior skills in English usage and expression and facilitated my learning French and Spanish. On my first visit to Italy, I found that I was able to comprehend a good part of Italian conversation.

In my teaching, I make every effort to engage the attention of my students. While covering the subject at hand, I bring into my lessons references to a spectrum of other subjects when relevant such as historical context, cultural elements, literary allusions, modern and historical implications and facts and trivia relating to the subject which I believe will not only be of interest to the student but will also provide a more rounded appreciation of the benefits of a wide ranging education.
For the greater part of my life I have been involved in various facets of education. I have acted as substitute teacher at the middle and high school levels for a total of 10 years, 8 of which were spent at 12 schools in Vermont and 2 at 10 schools in Hernando County FL. I held the position of Senior ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) with a highly reputed language school in Vienna ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was the valedictorian of my graduating high school class and one of the top high school math and science students in the nation, but I was not always a stellar student. For instance, I received a ā€œDā€ in math in the second grade. I attribute my transformation to an "A" student at least partially to my third grade teacher in whose class my math grades improved dramatically and I jumped from the lowest to the highest reading group. She helped boost my confidence, made me feel like I could actually do better, and made me excited about learning. My tutoring reflects my strong belief that achieving some or all of the latter can positively impact students' long-term learning.
I am just as comfortable tutoring students in math and science as in reading and writing. As a secondary school student, I received a number of top science honors, such as first place honors in several state scienc ... read more

At a Wall Street bank, I trained new hires in the proper transmission of Telex and SWIFT messages. I later moved to SR&D as a Programmer Analyst. I worked in the creation and maintenance of programs needed by the bank. For 12 years, I recruited and trained independent salespeople, while conducting my own demonstrations. My income averaged upwards of $50k annually. From 1998 to 2008, I worked in an overnight freight setting as a supervisor where I was responsible for orientation and training of new hires. I reported extensively via email, spreadsheets, and on the ASR 400 system. Currently, I am in the Educator Preparation Institute where I am in the last months of qualification as a Florida "out-of-field" teacher.
I believe that students will be more inclined to pay attention and remember if they are having fun. I try to put some fun in everything I teach. I have designed ... read more

For the past four years, I have spent much of my teaching career working with ESE children and those from low income backgrounds with significant learning barriers. I have been incredibly successful in making learning gains and working toward successful high school completion and college enrollment. I have also tutored students after school and during the summer for the past four years in all core subject areas.
My style is very unlike most educators, but that is why I believe I have such a high success rate. I believe that each student should have fair and equal educational access and that each child has the ability to learn. I believe in having the highest expectations for EVERY student. I also believe in making sure that curriculum and lessons are relevant to the child's surroundings, and I practice the strategies of modeling and practicing the concepts or assignments with the s ... read more

I believe that all students are different and will excel in academics by exposure to a variety of teaching techniques and strategies. As a result, I have made it my top priority to learn new and innovative teaching methods that will allow me to individualize my instruction for each student. I love to go to seminars which give concrete and explicit directions and training which will help increase the effectiveness of my instruction. Each student is capable of performing to their potential, it just takes a dedicated and motivated teacher whom never gives up to help them achieve their goals.

My teaching style is interactive and based upon understanding, instead of mere repetition of the matter taught. I always put the subjects in their broadest context possible, historical, cultural or other.
As a seasoned instructor in the Humanities I have a long and vast experience teaching at different levels: secondary school, college or university. My teaching has taken place in a wide variety of settings: from a traditional scholarly environment to courses of cultural understanding for the US Marine Corps. Geographically speaking my teaching experience is also rather vast; having taught in Western Europe, North- and East Africa and the USA.

Author and philosopher Kahlil Gibran says that a wise teacher "does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather, leads you to the threshold of your own mind". All students can learn, and each has the capacity that is unmatched by another. All students are unique. I believe that student centered learning is critical for retention, comprehension, and to increase prior knowledge. Hands-on learning can allow students to experience academics first hand. I am excellent at individual student assessment and I can create lesson plans based on current needs. I can adapt to learning struggles and provide alternatives to contemporary learning if necessary. An enthusiastic teacher can motivate any child and the give and take in a teacher/student relationship can improve both parties. I love what I learn from my students, and I value the responsibility of allowing them to learn from ... read more

I believe that each child's talents and abilities need to be nurtured through creative and constructive curriculum and delivery, including acknowledging the importance of integrating playtime with instruction. I have worked in many educational environments - public and private schools; juvenile detention facilities and home school cooperatives - each place offering it's own rules and protocol for developing and nurturing a child. One approach that I used in ALL these facilities yielded the best results for both child and educator (me!) and that was simply to follow this rule: provide trust and mutual respect, and give enough room for students to learn to make real, responsible choices in pursuing their true interests.
I am a creative educator and development professional with over 15 years teaching, curriculum development and program implementation experience spanning several count ... read more
