A Little Bit About Me...

During my year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Earth Ethics Institute, a non-profit organization at Miami Dade College, I was responsible for the successful execution of five high-profile programs. I strengthened my ability to multitask and was able to effectively implement each program’s components at their full potential and capabilities. I became accustomed to working independently under strict deadlines and overseeing many service-learning college students who assisted with events. As many of these service-learners regarded me as a role-model, I committed myself to bringing out their full potentials while mentoring them through their college experiences. I was considered the unofficial technological assistant of my workplace due to my proficiency at Microsoft Office and my ability to work at an exceedingly fast pace. In addition to this, my co-workers often request that I overview ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer face to face teaching sessions but I can be flexible. To start of I like to see what the student may already know about the language. From there we will practice new material and once the student feels comfortable with the newly learned signs I will then have them attempt at having a conversation using the signs. This is so they can practice using the signs as well as receiving and comprehending the signs.
I have been the designated interpreter for my mother and father who are both deaf for well over a decade. Throughout my years I have helped interpret for those in need at various events such as school, church, doctors appointments, and social events. To further my knowledge of the language I have taken ASL courses 1-3 at the University Of Central Florida.

Portuguese Certified Teacher, Native Brazilian

There are several different methods for teaching a foreign language. I use an eclectic approach based on the needs of the student. For the most part, I employ a combination of the three different methods described below: The Cognitive Approach: Introduces the four principle language skills for the first time (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The Natural/Communicative Approach: Focuses on communicative competence by progressing through oral comprehension and early speech production. The Total Physical Response/TPR: This method uses language and body movements which are synchronized through action responses and direct commands.

Knowledge is more precious than gold.

I love getting students interested in subjects before I start teaching them. There's no point in walking through a tunnel if you never see the light at the end of it. This can be done in many different ways such as comparing it to real life or showing what can be done with the knowledge acquired. The best way for students to start learning is to compare it to things they already know. For example, I explain a "Class", which is a term in the computer language Java, to an object in real life and all the different "methods", another computer science term, with all the different things that that object can do.
I have a passion for knowledge; I read everyday, write everyday, and teach everyday. In my high school career I tutored more people than I could have ever thought and received many thanks from all of them, in fact, I still have a huge thank you card from a group of students that ... read more
