A Little Bit About Me...

I always wanted to become a math teacher, but in order to become one in a communist regime; you had to be a member in the Romanian Communist Party. So, I obtained a BS in Mechanical Engineer (172 credit hours). I was working as a designer in Romania and had in parallel a private math and physics tutoring business. At NEIU I finished a lot of credits hours toward my second BA in Secondary Education Mathematics. Meanwhile, I found a job as a Mechanical Engineer at Mercury Products. Three years ago I have relocated with my husband's company in Dayton, Ohio. Meanwhile, I found an Estimator job at PTC and I was laid off due to the economy. So, I pursued my Alternative ATL at Antioch McGregor University and finished it this year.

My teaching style changes to fit the requirements of the subject and the needs of my students. I find that presenting and explaining works best for language arts and history, concept teaching works best for science, and direct instruction works best for mathematics. I also take into account the learning preferences of my students: left or right brained, visual, spatial, or kinesthetic because each prefers different treatment. As a tutor I strive to teach each student in the instructional method they prefer because this leads to an increased comfort level and willingness to learn, and it also enables them to process the material faster. I enjoy working with a student until I see the "light bulb" come on. Because people are individuals, I realize that the same approach will not work with every student. In general, however, it is helpful to take something that the student already knows, and to work from there to those concepts that they do not know. This approach provides a solid reference point for memory and understanding. Patience is a key, and realizing that the length of time required to learn a concept is not an indication of intelligence. I strive to maintain the dignity of the student I tutor in my demeanor to them, treating them as my comrades, my fellow learners, as opposed to my subordinates.
