Musical is one of my top subjects!

I have been involved in various aspects of teaching and tutoring for the past 14 years. I have tutored students one-on-one for reading, writing, and math, and have taught private music lessons for voice (since 2005), violin (since 2005), and piano (since 2004). I also taught fourth grade in an elementary school. I have taught children to read before kindergarten (one fluent by age 2-3, one fluent by age 3-4).

I have taught or worked with preschoolers through 5th graders. I've worked with special needs children, as well (ADD/ADHD, LD, ED, and ODD, for example). Children's church is where a year of my experience comes from. I had an amazing biology teacher in high school who was upbeat, interactive and made learning, memorable and fun. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.
