I have been a volunteer for various literacy programs for the past several years, focusing primarily on phonics rather than sight reading. I have worked in two group homes for dually diagnosed adults, meaning both physically and mentally challenged. I went to school online at Ashford University, for 2 years in an accelerated Bachelor's Degree program with a focus on education. With an inborn gift of language art skills and being a tutor for about the past 20 years, I have learned how to relate easily to any age group or functioning level.
I am a creative teacher, meaning that I assess the individual and do not have an agenda that I adhere to. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children of all ages. I can say I am patient enough to deal with elementary students being that I've done so before. I love to have fun with learning and can bring the fun of learning to the classroom. I want the students to want to learn and that is what I am going to bring to the table.
Children's church is where a year of my experience comes from. I would guide a group of children during the service and would spend individual time with those who wanted to brush up on their reading and writing. I enjoyed every minute of this experience and can say I made an impact in those children's lives.
