I have been teaching Reading Strategies and Basic Math at a community college for approximately 10 years. I have also taught pre-school, 3rd/4th in one classroom, and 5th, the last 2 classrooms were self-contained. My public speaking class is extremely participatory, both so students can gain experience speaking in front of an audience and because this format seems to keep students more interested in the material. My experience teaching children in theatre was also very participatory. I believe that students learn best when they can understand a given concept from several different angles. I also believe that each student is different and that any teacher must tailor her lessons to the individual student's needs. This is especially true of one-on-one tutoring sessions.
