My comments on tutoring Piano : I have played piano for over 40 years and have been a piano teacher for over 25 years. I studied classical piano but am comfortable with church music, broadway, pop, soft rock, and country and some jazz standards as well. I love teaching beginners and intermediate students and can take students to high level classical pieces. Some of my students started at the age of 3 and are still with me a few years later. I am consistent, and understanding, patient and warm. I use excellent methods and teach theory, technique,Hanon, performance, scales, and music for special occasions.

I have taught PK- Exceptional student education for 10 years, K-12 music for 15 years, private piano for 25 years, private guitar for 10 years, private voice for 10 years and have also taught regular kindergarten, first grade and 6th grade, I am teaching Spanish now and I am bilingual (reading, writing and speaking). I have lived and taught school in Wisconsin, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia and Florida, in that order. i have also written music curriculums, and curriculum for teaching preschool multihandicapped children, and have been a home visitor for severely multihandicapped infants and preschoolers. Since 2nd grade, when my teacher sat me next to a 10-year old boy with Cerebral Palsy, it seems I have been called upon to instruct others. I tutored our high school rockstar drummer in French so he could graduate. In college I taught 3- and 4-year olds, learning as much from them, as about them. In the Army, as an instructor and Executive Officer, those child development principles and skills were frequently handy and surprisingly adaptive with young adults, and a few senior cadre. I love teaching all ages, nearly all subjects. I understand that everyone has different styles of learning. When teaching to a group, ideally all styles would be touched on (auditory, visual, hands-on). When working one-on-one, though, it is possible to teach towards that individual's particular style of learning. This works so much better than a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. If one way of teaching isn't working, I search for a different approach, until I find one that works. I try to explain concepts using ideas and terms that the student is familiar with. This allows the student to relate new concepts to already familiar ones, which helps it 'stick' better. I love 'aha' or 'lightbulb' moments - it makes it all worthwhile!
