Throughout high school and college, I have tutored peers and younger students in both math and physics several times, occasionally for pay. Last year I was a course assistant for a college freshman-year math course in theoretical math at Harvard University. I am enrolling in a PhD program in pure math at the University of Texas, Austin, where I will have a 16-hour-per week teaching load including three sections of undergraduate calculus. When I was a course assistant, my section scored higher on the quizzes and exams than the other sections. I certainly put in a lot of effort and enjoyed teaching and helping students gain the deep understanding of the material to do well in a difficult college math course. My written and spoken communication skills are honed due to a liberal arts education at Harvard including humanities and science education, besides a concentration in theoretical

I believe that I am a very patient person, as well as someone who is easy to get along with. I would describe my teaching style as calm and focused on fundamentals. For example, when teaching math, I focus on building conceptual understanding rather than on plugging numbers into a formula. I am a firm believer that if the student truly has a deep understanding of the concepts, he or she will be able to approach and solve a wide range of problems, even ones that haven't been encountered before. During my undergraduate studies, I was involved in various tutoring/mentoring organizations on campus. I served as a mentor for local area children ages 8-14 as part of an after-school "big buddy" program. During my junior and senior years, I tutored newer students in math, science, and engineering courses. Additionally, I served as a teaching assistant for an upper-level engineering course where I

In college, I worked not only to achieve personal academic excellence, but also to help my fellow students attain their academic goals as well. I was a double major, receiving my BA in English and History, and also worked as a mentor and tutor in the college’s Writing Center. I helped students learn to express themselves in writing, combining an emphasis on proper grammar with the recognition of each writer’s individual voice. I tutored students of many fields, including Chemistry and Biology. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for a freshman Computer Science class my junior and senior years. Working as a TA taught me how to evaluate students and how to work with them to improve upon assignments. For students to succeed, they need to be able to have open and respectful communication between themselves and their teacher. Each student brings to a tutoring session or a classroom his or h

My teaching approach is to be direct and explicit, as well as facilitative. When working with students, my goal is that they internalize concepts and strategies that will ultimately enable them to perform independently. Then, when teaching reading and writing, I emphasize underlying structures and organization of text and the steps in the writing process. Breaking down barriers by pulling out language and ideas opens the door to rapport and understanding a student’s strengths and weaknesses. As an experienced Remedial Language Specialist, I have been responsible for designing and implementing individualized programs for students with a wide range of learning styles. In addition to fostering reading proficiency, vocabulary acquisition and strategies for passage comprehension, I am also an expert at teaching the writing process from brainstorming to outlining to final revision. I am a certified teacher in the area of middle school social studies. I am now also qualified for high school certification. I have been working as a long-term substitute in Burlington area schools in social studies for the last 5 years. I have also been working as a paraeducator in special education. I have worked in all subjects. I have a high interest in math, and successfully advanced to, and passed, Calculus two in college. This past year I have been helping several students one-to-one in geometry, algebra, and algebra two. I have also taught small group and one-to-one reading and writing at the high school and middle level. I believe that every student learns differently. I enjoy working one-on-one with students to give them an explanation that is meaningful to them. I also try to present new material in a way that is tailored to the learning style of the student. I am particularly enthusiastic about teaching mathematics to all students, and my record documents this fact. As an undergraduate I studied education, and acquired a secondary education license while pursuing a rigorous mathematics curriculum. At Dartmouth I have devoted myself to helping my students learn the power and utility of mathematics. I strive to help students learn how mathematics is a relevant, useful and even enjoyable part of their lives as they become contributing members of society. I take pride in developing strong relationships with my students, and I am strongly opposed to the “myth of ability” in mathematics. My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my busine

Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing. I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well.

I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. With respect and understanding for the students' needs, along with patience, preparedness and open communication, I feel I am able to reach students who are willing to be reached, and some who initially aren't so willing. I recently graduated in Economics from Bishop's University. In my final year at Bishop's, I taught a couple tutorials to assist students in lower level economics courses. In addition, I succeeded quite well in 4 mathemat

I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State.
