I played reed instruments (clarinet and saxophones) professionally in New Orleans in the late 1970s before returning to graduate school to study chemical physics. I recently graduated from NSU with a BS in Chemistry as well as minors in Biology and Math. I have very good writing skills not only because of writing lab reports but I worked for the university in the community relations office. I helped write many letters and plans detailing events we had. I have tutored fellow college students in math and science for the past 4 years. I am very adaptive to students learning style. I usually spend the first ten minutes of our first meeting figuring out what the student is struggling with and how to best meet their needs. I try to teach students more how to think analytical more so then just solving problems because it is more beneficial to the student. I feel that if I can teach the student how to read theorems, understand concepts, then problems just become easy at that point. I started tutoring part time in 2004 and have continued this throughout college. I worked as a math tutor for tulsa community college part time during the summer. I have earned over 190 hours of college credit, I have two degrees, and I am only 15 hours away from a chemical engineering degree.

Every student has a unique combination of learning styles, but he or she also has a predominant one such as visual learner, kinesthetic learner, etc. I try to figure out which style or styles the student responds to and use those styles to get through to the student. I also have the student explain the problem to me. Usually there is only one area where the student has gone astray in his or her thinking. By explaining the problem to me, I can see what he is and is not “getting.” Then we can concentrate only on what the student does not know.
