I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.
I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.

Over several years as a teacher, tutor, and teaching assistant I have had the privilege of refining my teaching strategy. For example, as a physics tutor, I coached a high school senior who was intimidated with the subject how to master it using a simple reproducible foundation. I have also life changing testimonials other science subjects. My academic achievements include PhD in biology and a BS with a joint Chemistry with Physics degree. I am always fascinated at the prospect of permanent uplifting a student's.
I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter.
