I can relate best with the student/youth.

I attended Rufus King World IB High school in Milwaukee, Wi, one of the most prestigious inner city high schools in the country. I excelled in IB Geography, Chorus, and Theatre. I was one of those kids who never did any homework, but passed my tests. Everyone came to me for help on projects, homework, ect. I feel that I didn't fully utilize my strengths in school as I could have, so I would love to share that with those who need it now.
Very relaxed, easy going, friendly. I feel less pressure and non stressful settings help students learn better. They can relate to a younger person who is more in tune with youth and someone who understands them.

I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. This allows me to gain their confidence as well as not create a bored atmosphere. I find this very important, especially with the more difficult students.

I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.
I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.

I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a student does have a mental model then I will test its accuracy using the standard procedures approved and or recommended by the institution of enrollment. Further encounters are then simply for reinforcement until the student is confident.
