I have been studying the Italian language and culture since 2009 and have been living in Italy since 2012. My teaching experience includes two years of high school language courses in Italy and also the tutoring of children ages 6-11. My teaching style is more non traditional. I use many games that come from my theatrical background. Many of the games require students to be on their feet. I make learning Italian a physical process, not just a mental one. I focus on the importance of the pronunciation of words. I use pictures and film clip to engage both visual and auditory learners. After graduating with a degree in Theatre, I turned my abilities towards mastering the spoken Italian language. Beginning my foreign language education at the age of seven instilled in me a determination to master the French language and then use it to help others. I have earned a bachelor degree in French and graduated summa cum laude in three years. The year after graduation, the graduate school selected me to participate in an exchange program in Paris, France, where I taught university-level English conversation and took classes on medieval and 19th-Century French literature. An extensive exposure to literary analysis taught me excellent grammatical, proofreading, and critical thinking skills. I have experience tutoring students in French and substitute teaching in general education. As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student discover for themselves the material not only educates them but fosters a passion for the subject at hand. Rote memory has it's place and is essential, but when a student becomes passionate about a subject, then the door is open for them to excel at it.
