Florida Writes is one of my top subjects!

I have strong classroom management skills and a passion for helping kids gain a better understanding for anything under the sun! I have high expectations of what my students can do, and help support them in achieving those expectations. My philosophy is that "can't" is the worst 4 letter word in the dictionary, as a result, I work to motivate my students to become life long learners and to enjoy learning new things.
I began working with children at the age of 10 in the capacity of babysitter/activities director. As a teen I began working in daycare centers and have worked in the capacity of teacher/assistant teacher/ director/owner. I have taught public school in Florida and the Bronx, NY over the past 5 years. I have worked as a drop-out prevention teacher and have had the privileged to work with a large number of disadvantaged and at-risk students.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Taught state test writing preparation for many years in Massachusetts public alternative schools. Tutor extensively to prepare students for state and college exams.

After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I taught (and tutored after school) until I moved to Florida in 2009, when my spouse began graduate studies at U.S.F. Since then, I have continued to tutor a wide range of students in subjects ranging from high school Latin, 5th grade Math, college English, S.A.T. and G.E.D. Preparation, and graduate level writing, and I have extensive training and experience with students who struggle with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and ESL issues, as well as with children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
I believe that all students can and will achieve ... read more

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Experienced with writing rubrics, administration and scoring papers.

I was a teaching assistant throughout high school. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi. I was selected to teach intensive intervention and pursued my Master’s degree with a concentration in remedial reading. During the past four years I have taught 2nd-adult English Language Learners and tutored K-adult students in all disciplines.
Helping learners find solutions to their problems is my passion. My greatest strength is compassion. I believe that anyone can achieve. I enjoy helping others discover their innate joy of learning. I thrive on seeing the "light" in a learner's eyes. It drives me with a determination to find the best way to help each individual become a lifelong learner.

Tutoring is not my part-time job, it is a full time endeavor. I tutor in many subjects including Elementary, Middle and High School curriculums. I tutor all ages. By working with my students, their parents and teachers, we formulate a plan and goals for our sessions. Sometimes I am a tutor for a test, or a coach for a project or a study skills adviser. I have experience working with students with ADHD and those with specific learning issues and IEP's.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : I have some experience with teaching writing skills at the middle school level and as part of the GED.

I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.
My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.

My teaching style is hands-on. I think that students need to experience as much of the concept as possible in order to learn about it. I know how to differentiate my teaching for all levels and learning styles, and I think that motivating students is the best thing a teacher can do to encourage learning.
I have a bachelor degree from the University of South Florida where I graduated Magna cum Laude. After graduating I entered a teaching certification program and am now a certified elementary education teacher. I have a year of teaching experience in grades K-6 as well as experience with ESOL and ESE students.

Teaching and tutoring, while similar, are actually two distinct practices. While teaching presents a subject to a large group of students, tutoring requires the tutor to work with an individual to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses, and go forward from there. As a tutor, it is extremely important to identify an individual's needs and work together accordingly.
I am currently a middle school math teacher in Hollywood Florida. Prior to accepting my current job, I taught English in Japan for two years. My teaching experience, along with a liberal arts education at Emory University, has primed me to be a successful tutor in a variety of different subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from SPC I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of students with various academic needs. I have taught grades 3-5, and have worked with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, SLD, Autism, ADD, and EBD. In the 2008/2009 school year, it was my pleasure to teach an inclusion class of 24 students who were performing 1-2 years below grade level. By the end of the year, 70% of my students made at least a years growth. I have attended many workshops over the years that has prepared me to be a 21st-century educator with the ability to meet the needs of individual students.
I do not believe there is one way of teaching students. Each student learns at different levels and in different styles. As I get to know the student, I will be able to determine what kind of learner (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) the student is and base lessons upon that learning s ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I recieved a BS in Psycholgy at FSU, while at FSU I worked at Children's Home Society in the emergency shelter group home. While working at CHS, I also worked at Early Head Start. After working with at risk children, I decied that I want to go to school for counseling. I have volunteered with Guardian Ad Litem and currently volunteer at Richard L. Sanders school with the middle school in Pinellas County. I currently do not have experience tutoring, but I do have experience working with all types of children of all ages.
Since I have gained the experience working with children of all ages, I have learned that children have different learning styles. Some children are visual learners and some are hands on. It is important to get to know and understand the child in order to understand their learning styles.
