My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Taught state test writing preparation for many years in Massachusetts public alternative schools. Tutor extensively to prepare students for state and college exams.

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. As a classroom teacher and as a personal tutor, I have seen almost miraculous results in a relatively short period of time, both in terms of academic achievement and student confidence. Passion and enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and I am a carrier. For a dedicated instructor, nothing is more satisfying than watching a student "catch" the learning bug.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : I have some experience with teaching writing skills at the middle school level and as part of the GED.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. Teaching came naturally to me, and I understand why. I was originally taught at the kitchen counter of an oversized farmhouse. My mom taught me to read along with other basic skills; this enabled me to skip a grade and enriched me with a great love for learning. When you have a great love, you love to give it away. I recieved a BS in Psycholgy at FSU, while at FSU I worked at Children's Home Society in the emergency shelter group home. While working at CHS, I also worked at Early Head Start. After working with at risk children, I decied that I want to go to school for counseling. I have volunteered with Guardian Ad Litem and currently volunteer at Richard L. Sanders school with the middle school in Pinellas County. I currently do not have experience tutoring, but I do have experience working with all types of children of all ages.
Since I have gained the experience working with children of all ages, I have learned that children have different learning styles. Some children are visual learners and some are hands on. It is important to get to know and understand the child in order to understand their learning styles.
