I have taught high school English for seven years. I currently hold a Master's in Reading which qualifies me to teach K-12 reading. My bachelor's degree is in English with an endorsement in Speech Communication. I love working with children. I believe that reading is the basic building block to education. When students struggle with reading, it spreads through all subjects. Students who struggle with reading usually need a non-family member to help guide them, and they need to feel success. Without a taste of success, a student will most likely resent reading in any way.

I believe that students truly understand ideas and processes when they discover them independently; rote memorization does not instill thinking skills. To be a well-rounded academic, students must learn to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to work through problems and issues based on broad concepts and rules. Pupils must learn and memorize certain rules and concepts as a matter of course, but it is the ability to take these ideas and apply them to many topics, often with help and guidance, that makes a true critical thinker. I strive to intercede and guide students when necessary to push them through the barriers to fully realizing how concepts apply to different problems and situations. I have educated both college and middle school students, and through these experiences I learned that the key to effectively teaching others is patience. I guide my students but do not do the work for them. Most students have the ability to learn the material being instructed to them. By being patient, I give the students the opportunity to problem solve on their own, which ultimately builds confidence. With more confidence, students seem to learn better. I believe this is the key to mastering any academic subject. I like to take a holistic view to my teaching style and see what the children need out of a teacher. Sometimes I prefer to work visually and hands on, where other times I feel the children learn best from reading and going through the book. I like to be patient and take a more relaxed approach with children so that they feel comfortable with me. I have worked for the past 6 years with children in school settings. I did a lot of tutoring work during my school counseling internship. I tutored 3 different middle school girls who needed help in all subjects. I also helped tutor 9th grade students who failed all of their first semester classes. I have expierence in classrooms teaching from my undergraduate work. I taught debate and public speaking at Carroll College from 2000 until 2002 and briefly assisted the University of Montana debate program during the 2003 academic year. Both positions required hands on instruction in the basics of rhetorical theory as well as extensive research and writing.
