My comments on tutoring English ESOL : I am a native speaker of English and have taught foreign languages for several years.

I love to help people communicate. I believe that learning a foreign language is good for the brain, as it creates new neural pathways and helps us to learn that there is always more than one way to solve any problem.
I earned a M.A. in Japanese language and literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Prior to that I was hotel concierge in Hawaii responsible for helping Japanese guests and hotel staff communicate. I worked for Nissin Travel in Columbus, Ohio as a travel agent for Japanese clients. I received a B.A in Japanese language and linguistics from the Ohio State University in 1994. I was an exchange student in 1992 at Kansai Gaidai Foreign Language University. All of these experiences have helped me develop high level proficiency in Japanese language and a deep understanding of Japanese culture.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. Along the way, I also experienced fulltime day teaching of a kindergarten class in Fresno and a combined 7th-8th grade moderate-to-severe special education class in Inglewood, California.
My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual. My teaching style starts with the class. I follow manuals as far as they can take me, but I like to get a feel for the class, learn there interests and disinterests and use those as teaching tools. My philosophy is: you learn a second language to help you advance in life and in the global economy. I think most students understand that, and if they don't I like to take the time to let them know the importance of a second language in this current global spectrum. I use music, clothes, food and shopping as key themes as well as some colloquial terms, nothing graphic, to lighten the mood every once in a while. I know it is not linguistics, but I enjoy emphasizing pronunciation as well, because regardless of how much you know, if you pronounce it poorly no one will understand you.
