I was in the top 10% of my class at an elite college preparatory school and earned a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. This has exposed me to great teachers and a variety of different teaching styles. I studied cello and piano formally for 7 and 10 years, respectively, and taught cello for 2 years. In high school I taught Adult English-as-a-Second Language classes for 2 years. I've also taught skiing and guided young children in after school art and literature programs for several years. My diverse education and experiences have led to my deep understanding of art, literature, history, math, science, and business. I have written numerous essays on art and literature, research papers, lab reports, and analytical reports.
My rigorous education has given me substantial insight into the "total package" needed to learn and succeed at a high level. The ability to lea ... read more

I am currently between my junior and senior year at Coastal Carolina University where I have a 3.998 GPA. I have received many honors and awards for my academic achievement such as induction to the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. I have always received excellent grades in math and science, but also in the humanities. My mother is a middle school teacher who has taught at all levels of education. I have been to her classes to assist her in teaching her students math and reading skills. I also frequently help my fellow classmates in subjects such as physics, chemistry, and math. I have taken all levels of math courses up through Calculus II.
I have not taught professionally, but I do have to help roommates and classmates with their work on a regular basis. I like to give them little tricks and tips for figuring out different kinds of problems. I don't like to just tell them ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.
I am just getting ready to graduate from the University of Utah with a degree in Mathematics and an minor in Physics. A Little Bit About Me...

Since graduating from MIT with a degree in Math, I have worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA and Siemens AG in Munich, Germany. For the last two years, I have been a graduate student at the U in physics. I plan to earn my Ph.D. in 2009. I started tutoring college level calculus and physics the year before entering graduate school, and as a graduate student I have been leading discussion sections and tutoring in physics as a teacher assistant.
I think the most important part of instruction is to give the student a framework for learning. I help them solve problems by asking leading questions so that they can develop the intuition for solving problems on their own, of course introducing and explaining basic concepts when necessary. Along the way, I explain insights, tricks, and tools that I use to solve problems. I constantly emphasize and repeat the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I prefer a student-directed teaching style over a teacher-directed learning style in the classroom. I believe that setting up lessons where the students develop concepts and do most of the critical thinking is most important for their education, self-esteem and self-empowerment. The teacher is there to guide and mentor students to a preselected objective by asking well thought through questions and providing ideas to consider. As a tutor, I would assess the student's prior knowledge and start building concepts in small managable steps so the student can more deeply understand the materials and start making connections to the topics being taught in class.
My educational background is in physics and mechanical engineering with minors in math and astronomy. After college, I've aimed towards obtaining a secondary math teacher license. Currently enrolled in the Alt ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During the spring of 2007 I tutored a college senior in Business Calculus. We would meet at a local bagel shop and go over homework problems he was having difficulty with. If these misunderstanding appeared to run deeper than the specified problem, I would help him understand the concept as a whole. I also tutored first through fifth grade students at a local elementary school in an after school program. These students were at risk for not passing their grade, so I would work to help them understand not only how to do their homework, but also the importance.
As a student working towards a Mathematics degree, very quickly I migrated away from the applied and into the pure, theoretical, aspects of Mathematics. Being familiar with math from several different pure standpoints (Topology, Algebra, and Analysis) I understand the benefit of being taught a concept from different viewpoints. ... read more

I am an extremely patient and positive teacher. I believe that the fundamental gift a teacher can give to their students is the gift of confidence. In my experience the primary obstacle to a student's progress is usually their own disbelief that they can do it. As a teacher, if you can persuade the student to overcome this doubt, the rest of the job simply requires patience and resilience.
I am an aspiring condensed matter physicist with extensive knowledge of chemistry and mathematics. I have experience in the industry working as a researcher and engineer which gave me a deep insight into applying the physical principles I learned in school. I have taught English as a second language in a formal setting and tutored numerous friends and colleagues in matters ranging from introductory physics to technical writing.

In preparation for college, I knew that in order to get into the kind of small private colleges I was looking for, earning a high enough score on the standardized exams like the SAT and ACT was very important. Although I scored very well on both tests, my writing and reasoning skills underwent great improvement in my college's intensive honors program for accelerated studies. Since 2005 I have been tutoring full time, and teaching in small classrooms for the Anchorage school district. I have had great success with a variety of students and types of curriculums in all subject matters.
My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is a personal act. Though I have enjoyed being in the classroom and seeing students develop as a community of learners, I have seen the most progress by addressing students' individual needs in a one-on-one situation. I see literature as one of most effective ways that people come to understand one another, the act of reading being a fundamentally unselfish and inquisitive act, an attempt to make sense of and relate to another person’s perspective. Writing is reading’s reciprocal act—a kind of reaching out in hopes of being understood, in adding somehow to the volumes of human perspectives. These are keys to democratic living. It is a great thrill for me to see these discoveries take place within the students I teach.
Having recently graduated with a master's degree in Literature and Writing, during which I also taught two college-level freshman writing courses, I am well ... read more
