I have a BA in pol sci from Wright State University with a minor in math. Since then, I have tutored at-risk students in various programs in San Diego. I attended National University and earned a teaching certificate. I worked in a junior college in San Diego as a tutor in math, English, reading, and social studies. I went on to work in the San Diego Unified School district as a teacher's aide and as a substitute teacher. I then accepted a position at the world famous Scripps Research Institute. Since English was not the first language of many of these scientists, it was necessary for me to help edit their papers prior to submission using extensive grammatical skills. I still work hard at keeping my math and grammar skills honed.

For me, education goes beyond the textbooks and worksheets that typify many social studies curriculums. Students need to experience the content on many levels, giving them a full and complete understanding in all areas of social studies. I believe in using technology such as interactive PowerPoints, SmartBoards, WebQuests, and simulations to enhance class materials. I firmly believe that each and every student is capable of learning and growing and I am confident in my abilities to facilitate that growth. Based on that belief, I will continue to set high but achievable goals for my students, challenging them to make the next step in their individual academic journey. I have the responsibility as a teacher to equip my students to face the real world after school. My overarching belief is that I can, and will, make a positive difference in each of my students through my teaching.

To be honest I worked as a Substitute because I was Laid off from my job. But when I started teaching I found it was very difficult to keep control of the class and to get the students to do their work. I thought I couldn't do this anymore. I didn't quit and things did get better. I learned that most of these children were from single parent homes, and were living below the poverty level. They were scared, hungrey and tired at times, and I new I had to adjust for me to be of any help, and I did. I believe it takes parents, teachers and students all wanting to work together to be successful. I feel I'm a very patient and caring individual and want my students to succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has been my last career change. My prior experience has been in the field of manufacturing, maintenance engineering services and construction management. This diversified background was instrumental in equipping me to acquire a technology education certificate in three states (NY, OH, NJ) I am equipped to tutor elementary students in math, the physical sciences and language arts. I am also certified to teach students in technology and special education.
My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. My style is setting high but realistic expectations with rigorous assignments. I also try to have an overdose o ... read more

My teaching style is a very hands-on approach with each student. Firm guidelines but a flexible and encouraging environment are what allows a child to develop their talents and their own personal style of learning. I think teaching style should revolve around the needs of the student. The last person I tutored, I created worksheets and practical exercises that served to help him learn the material. Worksheets worked well since he was studying for a final exam. The music videos and lyrics I told him to watch and read, were all meant to reinforce the grammatical lesson. In his case, when we met in person we did oral and speaking practice in addition to reviewing the worksheets. That is just one example, and I think that it really does revolve around the specific needs and goals of the student.
I worked for four (4) years at the Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, I tutored the last couple of years a few high school students in Spanish, I have translated for the VITA tax clinic/Spanish Coalition/Latino Empowerment Outreach Network, and I have served as a translator for Cracker Barrel.

My teaching style revolves around a desire to make complicated subjects as simple and accessible as possible. In teaching so many different types of learners, my methodologies are as varied as my students. A teacher's primary responsibilities are to listen, adapt and teach to the needs of a given student--all driven toward the goal of true education. Regardless, my teaching is grounded in the fact that greatest gift I can offer a student is my time and dedication. If a student truly feels how much I care about his or her betterment, that student's success is inevitable.
Throughout my entire life, regardless of the endeavor, I have been driven toward education--both of myself and my responsibility to teach others. I have tutored young children, children with attention disorders, high school and college students, and adults in subjects including math, science, language arts, gram ... read more

I love teaching and working with others, especially children. I first like to start with finding out where the child is confused by going over and re-teaching past assignments that were misunderstood. I like to go over past tests and make sure they understand what they missed and teach them the correct answer. I believe that this is very important so they can grasp future mater ... read more
