A Little Bit About Me...

I have always known I have wanted to be a teacher. I do my best to adjust what I am teaching to what my students actually have passion for. I believe that not all students learn the same and that is some thing we need to constantly be adjusting for. As educators we need to work with the things students already know to really help them to succeed.
I am a Math Major at the University of Northern Colorado. I am working on my Secondary Education Licensure in the PTEP (Professional Teacher Education Program) as well. I have done over a year of observations and working directly with students. I have 2 semesters left of classes at Northern Colorado, and will be student teaching next spring.

I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

Algebra, I find it rewarding to discover how individual students learn and then help them to succeed in their efforts. I love kids and am able to relate to different age levels and needs. I understand that every child learns differently and has unique strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to be able to teach children fundamental concepts that translate into solving specific problems.
