Need a fun, compassionate, patient, and understanding tutor?

Well, throughout my life, I have worked with fellow students to foster better understanding of class material both in myself and in my classmates. In addition to informal, unpaid cooperation in mastering class material, I have also held positions tutoring both as a freelance tutor and as an hourly employee of the Academic Advancement Center, a Trio Program run at Colorado State University. At this job, where I have worked for the past two years, I have tutored low-income, first-generation, and disabled students (both physical and learning disabilities) in a variety of subjects including Psychology, French, Composition, Sociology, and Spanish.
I tend to use the socratic method a lot to help my students arrive at their own conclusions and understanding of material, paired with some basic, interactive instruction when students do not already understand some of the material involved. ... read more

Math, Statistics,Writing, ACT/SAT/GRE Test Prep

I am a retired college/university professor, and have been tutoring actively for the last six years (privately, as well as in a mentoring program at a community college). My tutoring experience has focused primarily upon mathematics, statistics, writing, Test Prep (e.g., ACT,SAT, GRE, math placement tests), chemistry and economics. Students have told me that I explain otherwise difficult material (especially in mathematics), in a down-to-earth and commonsense manner that makes sense intuitively.
Flexible, down-to-earth -- I try to figure out how YOU learn best.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : College level.

I believe in success. There is no guarantee someone will learn on the first try. It's all about enjoying the learning experience and positive reinforcement. I also believe in humor and think that it can help a lot in peoples difficult situations.
I have helped tutor AVID high school students when I was a senior at Cherry Creek High School. I enjoy helping the kids learn and believe that being a tutor would pay it forward since I had so much help from tutors. I always helped my friends out because I was in higher level classes than them some of the times. I also worked with tutors and know how much of a difference they can make. I'm currently studying at CSU and still work with friends on homework if they need help.

I try to create a fun learning environment, ensuring the youth can ask questions, have flexibility at their learning speed and still master the material in ways that will stay with them. Depending on the subject area, I like to give hypotheticals, questions and real-world examples that will help achieve memorization easier.
After graduating from Georgetown University in Washington D.C., I returned to Wyoming to work in politics and government. I have been asked to teach chapters on Government in the local high schools as well as teaching Sunday School classes locally in Cheyenne. I serve in the State Legislature as well as working in the community to help youth succeed in their goals.

More About This Tutor...

My tutoring began while I was studying at Montana State University. My Junior year I enrolled in a class that was based around community service and my role was tutoring middle school aged children. The tutoring was in a small group setting and was on any subject the children needed help in but mainly in reading comprehension. After college, I attended Via Lingua where I became certified to teach ESL. It was here that my tutor experience expanded. For 4 months, I not only taught night classes but tutored on a one-one basis with students who needed further assistance. After moving back to the U.S., I got a job at American Cultural Exchange at Montana State University. When I started here my first job was tutoring 3 students from Japan. In these sessions, we concentrated on everything from grammar and conversation skills to reading comprehension.

A Little Bit About Me...

Coaching and mentoring has always been the cornerstone of my professional career as well as my academic pursuits. My professional experience includes Chief Operating Officer of a large LLC and a Bank President. I received my B.A. from the University of Phoenix in Criminal Justice Administration. Following, I was immediately accepted into a PhD program at Arizona State University. As a PhD student I study all facets of psychology within; and pertaining to, organizations. This includes styles of leadership, motivation, and stress of high-risk teams such as NASA and Special Forces.
Every great endeavor begins with a great plan. Once the topic is determined and the current level of the student is ascertained I begin by creating a custom program to get the child up to speed in a fun, engaging, and high-energy format. Drawing from my education and experience, I can relate com ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My degrees have taken me places that I never thought they would. I was excited to teach English in a school in Costa Rica for one year. There I was able to learn Spanish quickly as well as help elementary school children learn English. I taught grammar as well as science. I also tutored on the side in all subjects. Previous to this experience I tutored a fourth grader in geography, history, and spelling. In college I used many skills that helped me to prepare for teaching. A short list of these skills is math, creative writing, computer skills, memorization, and art work. Due to the fact that I was a science and art major I wrote many essays and made many different types of projects. For two semesters I did microbiology research, where I learned critical thinking and lab technique. I enjoy teaching children and have been assisting children in their homework for many years.

I am a Colorado State University graduate with my major in Natural Sciences as well as a completed Initial Teacher License. I have not only an extensive understanding of science but I also know how to specifically teach science. I greatly enjoy helping others learn and I had a tutoring position last spring at a local high school (Fossil Ridge).
I love to work with children and adults. I feel that the best way for my students learn is for them to get hands on experience whether that be guided problem solving or actual lab work. I think that through this way my students reach their greatest potential.

I possess both a B.S. degree in zoology/ biology and a M.S. degree in environmental health. I have a secondary science professional teaching license. I am adept at teaching science and math topics and I have had successful teaching experiences within all academic areas. One of my greatest strengths as a teacher is my ability to discern whether or not a student has understood a concept. I recognize that students learn through different methods and I know how to present complex information in a variety of ways so that a student grasps the topic. In some ways, tutoring is teaching at its purest because the teacher and the student can be focused on the material in such a way as to maximize the student’s potential and success. I have come to recognize that being a teacher is both my vocation and my avocation through which I contribute to society.

As a mathematics graduate, I am very detail-oriented and organized. Throughout college I tutored college students in calculus, business math, and statistics. I also tutored high school students in Algebra 1 and 2, Trigonometry, and Geometry. My easy-going and patient teaching style created many referrals that made me a successful and lucrative tutor. During the past six years I have tutored all levels of math with students ranging from Kindergarten to College age.
Although I earned a mathematics degree, I struggled to gain complete competence in algebra and geometry. I believe that my initial struggles have enabled me to become a better teacher because I constantly offer several ways of solving a problem to my students. I do not have to pause and wait for them to comprehend the material the first try. I can simply try re-phrasing or a different method. Also, I am intrinsica ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring Spanish in high school and have done it off and on since. I studied abroad in Spain for a semester and continue to work on my Spanish skills independently, and am very proficient in reading and writing Spanish. I have also tutored at Putnam Elementary School and Fort Collins High school, namely with reading/writing/English. I am currently tutoring independently in mathematics and because of my pre-med requirements, I can tutor almost any science field (General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Biochem, etc.) I also research for a professor at the University of Nebraska and help to write and edit dissertations/proposals in psychology and law, including the Drake Law Review.
All throughout my educational career I have learned best through observation. I typically like to solve one problem for the student, allow them to observe, and then work through ano ... read more

I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.
I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses spe ... read more

My style of teaching includes visual explanation (white board or chalk board), oral discussion, and hands-on manipulation when ever possible. I try to use as many teaching styles as possible as not all students learn via the same means. My style is also fexible based on the student I am instructing (age or handicaps). I believe the best way to teach science is to make it a fun and inquisitive experience.

My goal when teaching is to see each student not only arrive at a point of understanding, but to witness a sense of joy and confidence in the process, as the sense of "I can do it!" becomes the motivation for trying harder and gaining results. I like to encourage students with positive affirmation, but I am also straight-forward about the importance of hard work, correct results, and honest effort. I believe that students need to come up with their own answers through gentle coaching and learn that they are capable of studying independently. My job as a tutor would be to help each student believe in his/her capability to succeed by encouraging, coaching, and holding a high standard.
I studied both music and Spanish at Colorado State University, and during my time as a student, I worked as a piano teacher in my own home. I enjoyed interacting one-on-one with each student, as the ... read more

I graduated high school in the International Baccalaureate program with a 4.5 gpa and 30 college credits. I then went on to the University of Colorado starting out as a sophomore. I graduated 3 years later with a degree in Integrative Physiology. I have an extensive background in science and math. While at CU I was able to tutor children through a program called Reading Buddies where I would meet every week with them every week and read to them in English. Most of the children were mostly Spanish speaking and I would teach them English. Also throughout college I would meet and help others through various science subjects.
I love helping others learn and get through tough subjects. I loved homework all throughout school and would love a chance to be able to help others with theirs. I am very patient and want them to figure things out for themselves with my help. I will not simply te ... read more
