My comments on tutoring SAT - Math : I tutor SAT-Math as well

Have taught lower-level undergraduate math classes for 3 years; I have worked as a tutor for close to 2 years at the MATH center of Ohio University. I have worked as a grader for professors and graded the classes I taught myself, hence I am familiar with most of the errors students commit which wage war against their grades
I first get to know the student's problem and start from there

In teaching, one must realize that students learn at different rates of speed. Consequently, you need to find a pace at which the student feels comfortable. As most of my experience and interest is in mathematics, I always want to see a student be able to solve problems on their own. It's a great feeling when a student overcomes a hurdle and they realize that they can get the right answer.
In my year of graduate school I accepted a position as a teaching assistant. It was my first opportunity to stand in front of a class. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to teach and also help people in subject areas of which you have great expertise and interest. More recently, I have had vast experience working with middle-school students and am currently doing in-home tutoring. I continue to enjoy working with all types of students, especially in mathematics.

Taught AP, Honors and Regent level Biology and Honors Physics at Preston High School in NY Most of my students recieved Mastery or above on state exams at the end of the year. Most of my students scored above 620 on the SAT biology subject exam. Tutored throughout my college years the subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.
My methods are rather traditional. I beleive that there is no way around hard work. I will explain the problems in many different ways in order for the student to grasp a particular concept. I also am a irm believer that the more problems a student does, the better they become in doing the material.

I believe a supportive environment is critical for an excellent learning experience. First, I work to set up an environment of mutual respect, a place where the student knows I respect him or her and the student respects me. To accomplish this task, I actively engage with the student by showing an interest in the student's life. Essentially, I get to know the student. I then aim to clarify the subject matter the student finds challenging. If they still find a concept confusing, I approach the topic in an alternate manner. I do not give up on the student or the topic; I believe every student can understand a challenging concept by having a teacher explain it to them in a way the student finds comprehensible.
In high school, I served as a tutor for elementary school students for the state program Ohio Reads. At the University of Pittsburgh, I earned a BA in English Writing with min ... read more

Being a current student myself, I can appreciate the hardships and struggles of education. I feel that you must always level with your students, no matter what the age. The students are the ones who must lead the class. However, we as educators have a duty to guide and to nourish this idea. We must be leaders who encourage a positive and productive learning environment, while also maintaining an enjoyable experience. I believe in a split between communicative and explicit teaching. Students are given input through examples and other meaningful activities. They then are encouraged to attempt their own output through group work, homework, or discussion. At this point, students are prepared to solidify their learning with charts, graphs, mnemonic devices, and/or questions/answer sessions. Finally, new material is segued into the review, restarting the learning cycle. This overlap ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from the University of Toledo with a B.S., I used the math classes that I took to help tutor kids in the Columbus, OH area in basic math and algebra. I am currently taking extra classes in communication and writing. For the last ten years I've been working with others writing screenplays dealing with the creative side of other's perspectives.
With my personality, I love being around children and helping them with any problems whether it be in school or general problems they are going through. Normally, this takes investing time into not only the child, but the family, to see what the kids like and why. When looking back to when I was in school, although I had a natural talent for math I feel that the classes that I did the best in were the ones that the teachers would build a relationship with me. Although I was never overly interested in english or computers in H. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Ohio State in June 2011 with a BS in molecular genetics. I graduated with honors and with a GPA of 3.657. I have taken the MCAT with a score of 33 (10-BS, 12-PS, 11-V). I have never worked professionally as a tutor but I have tutored friends extensively throughout my college experience. I have an extensive background in biology, physics, chemistry, and the humanities. I am very well rounded in all subjects and would have no problem teaching any part of the MCAT, or any other educational material.
I really enjoy working with students, especially at the college level, who have not experienced a great deal of success in a particular subject and aspire to do better. I believe that the key to any kind of scientific or mathematical learning is repetition. It is first important to get to the heart of the concept, and see what is holding someone back from understand ... read more
