I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. It is especially important to understand the concepts behind the subject matter when planning continue in a similar learning subject.
I am a licensed Social worker with tutoring experience in and out of college. I have the most experience in tutoring Algebra and other math. I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. My first two years of teaching were as an intern with the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools. I taught 8th grade Math full time at a large public middle school. The next year I continued the same position and added on an after school tutoring program for all grade levels. I then took a position teaching 6,7&8 grade Math at an alternative school for students with severe discipline issues. This was a small setting with classes no larger than 12. I was able to spend a lot of time one-on-one with the students and develop personalized lesson plans that fit their needs and learning styles.
I strongly believe in inquiry based learning with the teacher acting as a facilitator or coach. I like to see students heavily engaged in what they are learning, and applying the new skills to daily life.
