I always seek to educate by exploiting a child's natural curiosity. I first try to build trust and discover what motivates each individual student. I rarely need to use authority as a teaching tool, but much prefer to use an agreed reward system and set achievable short term goals. I like to use a scientific method allowing the student to propose the direction of study and act as a guide to learning through experimentation with several approaches to the task. I teach by the book and assigned homework. The main goal is for the student to do well in the course and the first step is to understand the material in the book and to complete all of the homework assignment. That tests are usually based on what was assigned in the homework. The student should do as much of the reading and homework as they can on their own then go over areas where they have problems or questions with the tutor. I can help them work out the problem areas and discuss the subjects with them.
I had 10 courses in accounting as an accounting major and took 5 courses in economics even though only 3 were required becuase I liked economics. I only had one course in statistics but I did well in it. While attending Stetson College of Law I mentored elementary students at a local elementary school. I also volunteered as a tutor with the Adult Literacy Program in Pinellas for two and a half years. My student improved from a second grade reading level to a fourth grade reading level in that time. I currently volunteer with the Lawyers for Literacy program as a reading tutor for third graders preparing for the FCAT. I have professionally tutored middle and high school students helping them prepare for exams and the FCAT. I enjoy working with students of all ages to improve their reading and test taking skills.
I find helping people learn a skill and build confidence extremely rewarding. I use a sense of humor to make learning fun and keep my students interested. I also encourage my students by challenging them to attempt things they think they can't accomplish.
