While pursuing my Master of Arts at Ohio University, I worked as a long-term substitute teacher as a Title 1 Reading Specialist. I enjoyed this work immensely and focused on grades 1-5. In these tri-weekly sessions, we practiced our reading skills and built our vocabulary. During the 2008-2009 school year, I tutored 4th & 5th graders in reading at IPS #78. This tutoring program was offered through the United Way of Central Indiana's ReadUp program, which encourages reading skills. In grades 1-3 we learn to read. Beginning in grade 4, we read to learn. As an engineer and manager, training employees was an integral component of work performed throughout my ten-year professional career. I created systems and procedures, followed by training and "tutoring" for successful implementation. I also worked for the university during my college years as a Chemistry coach. I tutored students 20-hours per week for four years, providing one-on-one and team services. In high-school, I tutored elementary students in mathematics and reading. More recently, I participated in the HOSTS program, which is a program for the advancement of reading in elementary schools. My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. I am not overbearing. I am laid back, but at the same time, I make sure that the student learns what he/she needs to learn. I am very patient. I try to respect the student and not make learning seem like a chore. Building a foundation of learning skills, even during a short tudoring session can really change a student's approach in all of their classes. I have taken education classes at Northern Kentucky University. At one point, I was considering on being a Art Teacher. I didn't finish with that path, but I did gain much experience with children and knowledge during that time in working with students. I have worked and studied special needs children as well.
