While pursuing my Master of Arts at Ohio University, I worked as a long-term substitute teacher as a Title 1 Reading Specialist. I enjoyed this work immensely and focused on grades 1-5. In these tri-weekly sessions, we practiced our reading skills and built our vocabulary. During the 2008-2009 school year, I tutored 4th & 5th graders in reading at IPS #78. This tutoring program was offered through the United Way of Central Indiana's ReadUp program, which encourages reading skills. In grades 1-3 we learn to read. Beginning in grade 4, we read to learn. I love children and I love teaching children. I teach using a variety of methods. I have learned that children have different ways of learning. Some children are visual learners so I used plenty of visual aids when teaching these children. Some children are kinetic learners so I made sure that I used manipulatives when teaching these children. I believe that all children have a "best way" to learn. I determine what that way is, and then I taylor the way I teach to that way. I love seeing a child light up when they "get it". I love learning and I want to pass that love on to others.
