I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities. Eventually, I took the lead in creating an inclusion program and was asked to be the department head. At the end of my four years, I completed my Masters Degree in Special Ecuation. My goal in tutoring is not only to help the students grasp the information, but to cultivate a love of learning and confidence in how they learn best. I want to equip my students to be successful in future subjects because they understand how to learn and how to organize themselves in a way that works best for them. I also believe in learning through experience, be that acting out a concept, making a model to explain something, or searching everyday life for examples that will be relevant to my students. Upon my graduation from high school, my calculus teacher, who had noticed my natural aptitude for mathematics and my ability to help other students to understand it, referred some younger students who had been struggling to me for tutoring. Due to my success with this first student, or rather, the student’s new found success in his math courses, my former teacher referred another student to me the following summer. In subsequent years, while I was pursuing my education, many friends and fellow students, asked me to tutor them in various topics ranging from college algebra, to statistics, to calculus.
