Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.
I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the ... read more

I have a conversational teaching style. I emphasize the thought process that facilitates problem solving and conceptual understanding that lies behind all math and science subjects.
I worked for Panther Academic Support Services at UW Milwaukee from Sept 2007 to May 2011. I tutored students individually and in group settings in math and science courses. I have worked with students from all academic backgrounds. I began tutoring algebra to incoming freshmen. I tutored calculus to business students and I tutored physics to students studying health science. I have found that it takes multiple ways of presenting a topic for students to have a expert grasp of the subject.

I love teaching and working with children. I tutor full time. Teaching is my passion. I can set your child on the road to success. My students see entire grade level jumps in just a few hours of tutoring. I believe all children can reach their potential if they are given the appropriate tools and learning experiences. I use manipulatives and games to help make learning fun and to reinforce concepts. I offer a relaxed and gentle approach to learning that takes the child at his own pace and gives him every chance to succeed. I tutor students in Writing through the college level. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. Math It is my responsibility to understand each student's weakness in math and I need to take them further in understanding this subject area.
Graduating from three different institutions, I have earned two master and a bachelor degrees – MS in Biology and MA in Special Education, and BA in Biology. Math and Science have my main strengths in earning the degrees. Being deaf since birth, I have learned a lot about deaf ... read more

I enjoy tutoring, especially with motivated people. I have much experience in translating difficult academic problems to meaningful skills. I still don't have my times tables memorized but can demonstrate difficult fractions and imaginary numbers to others. My experience in laboratory, design and classroom settings allows me to illustrate complex concepts meaningfully. I enjoy working one-on-one to help facilitate deeper understanding. I would consider working with special needs children or those with learning disabilities.
I have had experience in tutoring mathematics at local community colleges. I have also tutored chemistry, physics and many medical subjects informally. I have finished classwork in a medical program and have assisted with many classes, mostly in physiology related courses.

My teaching style is to help make student's successful by understanding their learning style. I have had the good fortune of working with myriad learning styles in a special needs environment, (in the home and classroom) which runs from autistic spectrum disorder to talented and gifted. Working with this huge array of kids has really opened my eyes to a variety of learning tools to ensure success. I am also very enthusiastic and children always find me to be relatable, despite where they are coming from in their academic process.
I began working in the school setting in February, 2002. Initially I worked as a teacher's aide in the special education (K-5) classroom environment. Shortly after, I began to tutor after-school hours for one of the special needs students. The "parent network" took off and soon I was tutoring five students per week. In 2004, I returned to school for ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Educationally, I have a BA in Mathematics from Vassar College, a school where I achieved a high level of success graduating with high honors both generally and within my major. While this gives me the mastery necessary to approach all levels of math up to the graduate level, my teaching experience makes it possible for me to convey those subjects to my students. I began working one on one with students while teaching guitar in high school and since then have continued to facilitate students' learning at various levels. Most recently I've pursued experiential education working with kids on farms, backpacking trips, and canoe expeditions. I apply this hands on approach to education in the classroom as well, one that I found successful while teaching Linear Algebra to college freshmen my senior year.
For various reasons, we all learn in different ways. Often times this is difficu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an educator for 20+ years. My primary focus over the past 14 years has been elementary mathematics. I have extensive training in pedagogy and content for mathematics instruction. In 1996, I started on a path to become an educator of teachers who wanted to enhance their expertise in the teaching of mathematics. From 1998-2007 I was a district trainer of elementary mathematics in one of the largest school districts in the U.S. This allowed me to help my peers become effective teachers of mathematics, and it also helped me to gain invaluable expertise in understanding the very core of what it means to teach mathematics conceptually. My teaching certificate covers; elementary education PreK-8 and physical education PreK-8.
