I knew after taking a couple of courses when I went back to graduate school in 2003 that I wanted to go into teaching, at least on a part time basis. My daughter is an elementary school teacher, and I felt that I had an influence on her choice of a major. I enjoy seeing students learn. The entire time of seeing them with their first class in accounting until their last class is a fun ride for me. Just seeing their increase in their level of knowledge is a wonderful feeling. The best part of my year is graduation day, when I see students that I taught at least once class graduate. I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people.
