A Little Bit About Me...

While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This included individual and group tutoring sessions in all subjects. I mostly tutored in mathematics as this is my specialty. After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics. While at EIU, I had many experiences teaching in a classroom setting. I also occasionally tutored high school and college students in both physics and math. After graduating with my Bachelors degree in mathematics, I tutored for a year at the college level.

I enjoy the process of teaching itself. I find it a very rewarding experience to introduce others to a new and somewhat unusual way of looking at things when I teach about physics or mathematics. In many ways both can be confusing and to many seem counter-intuitive. This challenge makes it satisfying when students begin to understand the concepts and see them confirmed by real life. By directing students and using a gradual reduction of assistance on problems students build the confidence to tackle any kind of problem. In addition to teaching the knowledge necessary for handling a problem, I believe it is necessary to also teach the techniques for applying that knowledge to any problem.

I have always had an interest in helping others learn new material. I have earned a BS and MS in Physics, and in the process of doing this I also did extensive coursework in Mathematics. I like to try to explain concepts in a way that I believe my student will find easy to understand. If I find that they do not understand I will try a different method of explaining the concept. I often like to use sketches so students can visualize what is being taught or story problems so they can see some practical applications of how the concept can be used to solve problems.
Having enjoyed mathematics and especially calculus in high school, I decided to major in Mechanical Engineering so that I would be able to enjoy the many math courses that were required. I excelled in Calculus during my studies at Pensacola Christian College. I had the opportunity to help a few other students with their Calculus and other subjects during my Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years.
