My comments on tutoring Social Studies : My sociology, government and history proficiencies transfer easily to Social Studies.

Taught classes in GED in workplace to help co-workers qualify for promations; also taght GED at Skinner M.S as part of field work for teachers classes in which I received an "A"; was an AVID (advancement via individual determination) in both middle school and Hinckley H. S. for four years. A Little Bit About Me...

While earning my bachelor's degree, I worked in several tutoring programs assisting students with reading comprehension and writing composition skills. I taught grammar to small groups, read one-on-one with third graders and assisted junior high school students with their homework assignments. Though my degree is in fine art, I began my undergraduate career as an English major. In high school I took both AP English exams and I went on an honors trip to England to study British literature. I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. I try to simplify the subject (or put it in terms the student will grasp) so the student will understand it, thus my teaching method depends on how the student learns.
I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101. Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults. I’ve never bought into the argument that some kids just can’t do math. There is plenty of truth that some learn math much quicker and easier than others, but with a good work ethic and plenty of encouragement all kids are capable of learning these sciences. I feel the most important thing to do as a teacher is to stay positive, and try to somehow relate the math problems to real life situations. When correcting a student, it’s vital to carefully choose your words, for a harsh response will demoralize the student’s spirit and desire to learn.
