A Little Bit About Me...

I have been around teaching my entire life. My mother is a fourth grade teacher and I have loved learning how she likes to teach and how her teammates like to teach as well. I help her grade all the time and love getting to help the kids out when I am home from school. I started working in a church nursery when I was 11 and continued on until I left for college when I was 18. I have worked with age levels newborn-8th grade. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.
