I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a student in the Elementary Education program at University of Phoenix I completed 13 weeks of teaching to a first grade class in 2004. I also tutored multiple students at that time at two different elementary schools. In 2009 I tutored two boys, ages eight and ten, in multiple subjects for approximately three months, with up to three sessions a week. I have an affinity for Science, Writing, English Composition, Spelling, Speech, and languages; I speak and understand Spanish on an intermediate level.

As an undergraduate, I became very passionate about the sciences and graduated with a BA in Chemistry with a minor in Psychology and Biology. During my collegiate years, I Peer Tutored for General and Organic Chemistry laboratories and held review sessions for these courses. During my latter two years, I also tutored at the Writing Center, acting as Lead Tutor during my senior year. The bachelors degree I received in English Literature and Spanish allowed me to spend two years serving as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador. There, I became fluent in Spanish and decided to return to the United States to pursue degrees in both Elementary Education and teaching English as a Second Language.
